The default rule in Virginia is that you have until 30 days after your conviction date to pay any fines or costs that you owe the court. This is actually double the old rule of 15 days. However, the current rule in Virginia is you have 30 days to pay.
If you don’t pay within 30 days as required by the court, your license or your privilege to drive in Virginia will be suspended. So it’s critical that you pay by the deadline given to you by the court.
If you need more than 30 days to pay, most judges are very receptive to requests for additional time and would usually ask how much time you need. It’s fairly routine around the area I practice to get 60 to 90 days to pay if you need a little extra time. Honestly, if you make a few payments and still can’t pay it all within that period of time, I believe a lot of the judges will give you even more time. The key is that you want to be making a good effort to comply with the court’s order and paying what you can.
